Before the official blurb, let me give you my personal opinion.. Its quick!
With the surf performance of the Ares and the flat water glide of the Draco, the Vela is a true all around canoe designed for peak performance in all conditions.
In designing an all around canoe, it is a battle of give and take. Kai has tried to find the sweet spot of performance in all aspects, taking lessons learned from both the Ares and the Draco that allow you to get onto bumps easier and hold the glide longer. Similar to other Kai Waʻa models, comfort and ease of use are prioritized making the Vela optimal for both Novice and experienced paddlers alike.
The pinched bow effortlessly cuts through flat water, while the added rocker and round belly helps to remain lively and float over bumps. The added width behind the seat and a bit of reserve buoyancy help to elevate and extend the carriage/glide. The Vela catches the bump earlier and holds its glide well, cutting through the water while still manoeuvring with ease.

NEW HULL DESIGN
I pinched the bow more like the Draco to cut through the flat water easier. I then added rocker so that it would stay dryer in the bump and remain lively. The mid section is a round belly to help it float over bumps. It has a bit of reserved buoyancy as well to help with the carriage. I also added a little width behind the seat to help elevate the carriage of the hull when surfing. Everything aft of the back iako is very similar to the Ares.

UPDATED COCKPIT DESIGN
The Vela cockpit has Draco DNA and is 2" longer than the Ares allowing it to accommodate a wider range of height/inseam in paddler. Focusing on comfort and body mechanics, the Vela seat well is 1/2" wider for added comfort and the footwells are also deeper allowing for more leg drive and an ergonomically correct position. The gunnels are also slightly higher than the Ares which helps to keep surf out in bigger water.
