Choosing blade width comes down to resistance. How much resistance do you want on your blade?

The basic rule is to not pull your paddle back but instead pull the canoe forward. It really comes down to your strength and experience level. You’ll want to have enough blade to be able to hold the pressure without slipping while having enough strength and endurance to maintain a desired pace.

Shafts

The Pala Paddle is available in inch increments from 44″ to 54″ . If you aren’t sure what size is best for you, we’d recommend trying a few out to see what feels comfortable. As a general rule of thumb, when standing flat-footed with the paddle set on the ground, the t-top should come about to your sternum. For OC6 some prefer a slightly longer paddle, some of this can depend on the stroke that your club teaches. If choosing a paddle for OC1, try 1 and 2 inches shorter than what you typically use for OC6 to see if this is more comfortable. The “right” option for you can come down to personal preference.
